Benton Becker was a key advisor to President Ford in the pardon of Richard Nixon and the disposition of Nixon’s papers and the famous tapes. Becker spoke at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor upon the 35th anniversary of one of our most dramatic presidential transitions.

Mark Updegrove: The Presidents and the Cold War

Mark Updegrove, who wrote "Baptism by Fire: Eight Presidents Who Took Office in Times of Crisis," is the director of the Lyndon Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas. His remarks explored the challenges faced by Presidents Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy and their Administrations during the Cold War. Updegrove also participated in a book signing after his remarks.

2010 Student Essay Contest Awards Ceremony

This year, students participating in the President Gerald R. Ford Essay Challenge were asked to write an essay themed "The Meaning of Change Today". The 18 finalists were recognized at a special President's Day awards program at the Museum. This year's 1st place winner was Martha Veldkamp, a senior from Calvin Christian High School.

The Essay Challenge is a collaboration between The Grand Rapids Press Newspapers in Education, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

Biskupic is the Supreme Court correspondent for USA Today and has covered the Supreme Court for 20 years.

Inside the Cold War: The KGB and CIA Perspectives with Peter Earnest and Oleg Kalugin

Oleg Kalugin oversaw the work of American spies, matched wits with the CIA, and became one of the youngest generals in KGB history. In 1990, he went public, exposing the intelligence agency’s shadowy methods. Peter Earnest is a former CIA operations officer and the founding executive director of the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC. Together, they tell their stories.

James Kitfield spoke at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Kitfield is the 2009 winner of the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on National Defense. Mr. Kitfield’s speech, A World of Woes: America’s Crossroads, examined an America beset by a nearly unprecedented set of national security challenges. He is the national security and foreign affairs correspondent for the National Journal newsweekly. He has written on defense, national security, and foreign policy issues from Washington, DC for more than two decades.

His talk focused on President Obama and his first year in the White House. Following the lecture, Mr. Walsh autographed copies of his book, From Mount Vernon to Crawford.

Patti Matson was one of only two Nixon staff members retained by the Ford Administration. After serving for Mrs. Nixon, she became the Assistant Press Secretary to Mrs. Betty Ford. Upon leaving The White House she embaraked on a 25 year career at ABC News New York. She is now an independent consultant.

Rich Atkinson, a longtime correspondent and editor for The Washington Post presented the paperback release of The Day of the Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944, the second volume of his Liberation Trilogy. Jeff Idelson, the president of the Baseball Hall of Fame, spoke on the history of the Hall and baseball as his appearance marked the opening event for the feature, Born to Play Ball. The Ford Museum borrowed numerous items from the Hall for the exhibit, such as Sandy Koufax’s high school glove and Cy Young’s uniform.

U.S.S. Gerald R Ford (CVN-78) Naming Ceremony

January 16, 2007

The Secretary of the Navy announced on January 16, 2007 the selection of "USS Gerald R. Ford" as the name of CVN 78, the first Aircraft Carrier in what will be the "Gerald R. Ford" Class of Carriers.
